Brownies

This is our Try-it page.  Our troop has earned many.  As Brownies we earned a total of 17 try-its. The girls had to be present at the meeting and do the activities listed to earn the try-it.  Some of us have more try-its because we attend Brownie Fun day where we earned 4 more.

This is a list of the try-its we had earned and what we did to earn them:

Manners
1996-97 Made puppets out of paper bags, wrote and performed skits with our puppets, Created a stage, props and scenery.
Puppets, Dolls and Plays
1997-98 Looked at a globe and talked about the different countries, Learned some games that are played in different countries, Looked in magazines and found pictures of different people and tried to figure out where they were from.
Around the World
1997-98 Made a list of our likes and dislikes and compared them with everyone in the troop, Played what if... example: what if your friend forgot her lunch, what would you do? Made a scout friends autograph book, Drew pictures of when we were sad or happy.
Caring and Sharing
       1997-98 Learn about Girl Scouting from stories in our handbook, for a few weeks we drew pictures of what we thought the Girl Scout laws mean, Learn all the different hand signs Girl Scouts use for different things.  Talked about Juliette Low's birthday.
Girl Scout Ways
1997-98 Wrote down ways we use numbers to describe our bodies, example: 2 eyes, 1 nose.   Tried to guess how many inches tall our friends were, we were all then measured and weighed (Mrs. Wegner kept that secret) and then found out how close we were.  Decoded a math code that stood for letters.
Math Fun
         1997-98 We went out on the playground. We made shadow pictures with exposure paper and different objects.  We played shadow tag.  We traced each others shadows with chalk on the playground.
Me and My Shadow
1997-98 We made wind wheels with paper and pencils.  We made 3 different wind toys, a paper plane, a Circle Glider and a helicopter.  We tested all of them.  We tried to figure out how these would work before we tested them all.
Movers
1997-98 We made a few different things doing Origami.  At Christmas we put together different shapes like a puzzle to make a Christmas pin.  We made ink blot pictures.   We made paper snowflakes.
Number and Shapes
  1997-98 We learned several different games.  We played Red Light, Green Light, Hawk and Hens, Kim's Game (a remembering game) and a few others.
Play
1997-98 I think this was one of our favorite try-its to earn this year!  We tested our different senses by: 1.  closing our eyes and smelling different things and trying to identify them.  2.  reaching into a bag and feeling things and trying to identify them.  3.  Made an optical illusion to fool our eyes.  4.   Tasted different things with our eyes closed and tried to identify them.   Learned the Girl Scout Promise in sign language.
Senses
1997-98 We talked about selling cookies.  Setting goals.  Manners and safety when selling and delivering cookies.  Collected money and turned it in on time.

In 1998 our troop sold 1583 packages, we had 15 girls in our troop at the time.  In 1999 our troop sold 1935 packages of cookies with 12 girls selling.  Good job girls!!

Cookies
1998-99 Talked about what an autobiography is and tried to write a small one about us.   Wrote down different things we are good at.  Talked to female adult about their job and if that's what they wanted to be when they were little.  Found out about some women pioneers. 
Careers
1998-99 Learned about the law and rules and why we have them (we all pretty much knew this already).  Drew a picture and wrote a short paragraph about a problem in our neighborhood that we could maybe help fix.  Learned about someone in a newspaper or on TV that did a good dead.   Talked about ways we could help others.
Citizen Near and Far
1998-99 We talked about our talents, interest and hobbies.  Thought of  things we might like to try as a hobby.  Talked about hobbies we could share with the girls in the troop.  Figured out we all have hobbies, some different some same.  We wondered if we could teach our hobbies to one another.
Hobbies
1998-99 We played music during our meeting. Talked about how it made us feel, what we felt like when we heard it and where we thought it would most likely be played.  We played music on cups filled with water.  We learned some new songs and tried to sing them in rounds.
Music
  1998-99 We tried different co-ordination tasks.  Did activities to see how our hands work with our brains.  Looked at our fingerprints we made.  Counted our pulse racing and resting.  Saw how our eyes reacted to light and dark.
My Body
     1998-99 We made Troop T-shirts that we wore in the Grafton Christmas parade.  We made friendship bracelets.  We made placemats out of fabric and fabric paints.
Art to wear
1998-99 We made rock candy, unfortunately it took way longer than we thought for the water to evaporate.

Dancercize Outdoor Adventure Ready, Set, Go Senses

We have also earned patches which get sewed on the back of our vest/sashes.  Some of these include, patches for selling cookies in 1997, 1998 and 1999, a theater patch for the backstage tour of "Sound of Music" at the Grafton High School (GHS) in 1997, a theater patch for the backstage tour of "Grease" at the GHS in 1998, A swimming patch for attending the 1998 swimming event held at GHS, Attending either skating event in the 1997-98 school year at Skateland, a patch for attending the 1998 Christmas break skating party at skateland, a patch for attending the Brownie sing along held at St. Joes church Grafton, a patch for attending the father/daugher dance.  Girl's have I missed any?

We have also had some fun events where no patch was earned, but we had tons of fun!  We toured a restaurant and made our own pizza's, we had a sledding party in Mrs. Wegner's back yard, hiking in the woods behind our school, marched in the Grafton Christmas Parade in 1997 and again in 1998, comedy sportz in 1999, ice cream social and more.
